My sister and I always enjoy watching movies together whether it be in the cinema or in the comfort of our home. We enjoy watching all types of genres but the one that we enjoy the most is horror/thriller genres. So here are my all-time favorite horror/thriller movies that are worth watching on Friday nights.
THE CLOSET (2020)
You will never look at your closet in your bedroom the same way anymore after watching this South Korean horror movie. This movie revolved around a bunch of ghost children full of hatred and vengeance (child ghost always give me the creep!!). The scary element is just nicely done, there is a time for touching moment and also a cute shaman who gonna charge you a high bill! It definitely able to bring back the classic ghost movie's atmosphere for my sister and me.
OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL (2016)
Even the theatrical release poster kinda freaked me out. I think this is probably because of when we were younger, our older cousins like to tell us scary stuff about Ouija board, trying to scare the shit out of us, so yeah, childhood trauma. Lulu Wilson who is known for her roles in some of the well-known horror movies such as Annabelle: Creation (2017) and The Haunting of Hill House (2018, TV series) with Mike Flanagan as the director, making this movie a smashing success. This movie is about a widow, two daughters and of course, a Ouija board! And honestly, this movie is still managed to make my skin creep long after watching.
HUSH (2016)
Another smashing success movie directed by Mike Flanagan and this time, collaborated with his wife, Kate Siegel as the leading character in the movie. What happened if you live alone in the woods when a masked killer sneaked into your house? Did I mention that you are also deaf who lost the abilities to hear and speak? Talk about screaming for help. This heart-stopping movie will definitely have the audience hold their breath until the very end.
THE INVISIBLE MAN (2020)
Another brilliant performance from Elisabeth Moss who is also in The Handmaid's Tale (my all-time favorite TV series). I have to admit that I've watched this movie is all because of Elisabeth Moss is in it. This horror movie follows Elisabeth Moss as the leading female who thinks that she never really get out from an abusive relationship and that she is still being stalked by her hunky, abusive dead boyfriend. This box office success movie is a worth watching movie with your besties on Friday night.
THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE (2016)
I have to say I come across this movie by accident and it was a happy accident. The storyline is pretty simple with two coroners and a dead body of an unidentified woman, but it has successfully delivered the eerie atmosphere for the audience. This movie is more of a psychological horror type and seriously, Olwen Kelly who played the dead body of an unidentified woman is able to send shivers down my spine by just lying there.
1408 (2007)
It will never go wrong if Stephen King's name appeared. This movie is about a haunted hotel room and no one has lasted more than an hour inside of Room 1408 in the last 95 years. However, John Cusack who played a skeptical author who makes living by writing books evaluating supernatural events insisted on staying in Room 1408 despite Samuel L. Jackson trying to stop him and even bribed him with a bottle of Whiskey. So here we are for a 'fun' ride in Room 1408. Stay scared!
STAY ALIVE (2006)
Despite the not-so-positive reviews, I personally enjoyed this movie. This movie is about a group of friends who played a video game titled 'Stay Alive' which is inspired by the story of Countess Elizabeth Bathory (you know, the Hungarian chick who killed hundreds of young women and allegedly bathed in the blood of virgins to retain her youth). So, what would you do if the Hungarian chick still come after you long after the video game? Game over?
THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT (2009)
Though the "generally unfavorable reviews" and "based on a true story" controversy, my sister and I truly enjoyed this movie. This haunted house horror movie is still able to give us the creeps and the "scary" scenes are not too shabby. Overall, I enjoyed the storyline and it is still a good horror movie to watch on a Friday night.
THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT 2: GHOSTS OF GEORGIA (2013)
This movie is not a direct sequel to "The Haunting in Connecticut." Another decent haunted house horror movie which we enjoyed watching. The "jump scares" scenes are nicely done (not "trying-too-hard" type). The only thing that is really bugging me is the reason of buying the house. The reason given is that the family received such a great deal from the bank and hence, they bought the house. Not really making sense in my opinion because normal people will question the real reason behind this great deal. However, it is still a fun ride to a horror movie night.
RIGOR MORTIS (2013)
This horror movie is a tribute to the Mr. Vampire film series (if you grew up watching Mr. Vampire like me). So, this movie really brings back my childhood memories. Even if you never watch Mr. Vampire, Rigor Mortis is still successfully deliver the intensity of fear that you are looking for in a horror movie. So, if you want to try your hand on a Chinese-type horror movie, you are in the right place. Did I mention that this movie also premiered at the Venice Film Festival?
